The route
Start: Newark, NJ
Use New Jersey Transit to reach Newark Penn Station (20 minutes by train from New York Penn Station or PATH), then follow the East Coast Greenway south to Edison, NJ (MetroPark station) or continue to Metuchen (Metuchen station) and return by train.
The route is a mix of roads and trails (often in parks) starting in New Jersey’s largest city.

Provisions
After exiting the train station, grab coffee and a pastry at one of several Portuguese bakeries a few blocks away along Ferry Street.
Have an Italian “layover” at Carmen’s Italian Bakery in Union Township (on the route).
Little India, the largest Indian business hub in America and home to countless restaurants, is on Oak Tree Road in Edison and Iselin. Go right at the intersection of Berkley Boulevard and Middlesex Essex Turnpike, then left at the light across Route 27 and onto Oak Tree Road.
After you’ve finished exploring and eating, return to the East Coast Greenway and Middlesex Essex Turnpike for the final mile or two to the Metropark train station. New York-bound trains stop at Newark Penn Station.
